Dear families,

Learning First Charter School will be upgrading our Newsletter soon! In an effort to improve our communication, we will soon be switching to a new electronic newsletter format to share important information with you. As part of this change, we will no longer mass-print our newsletters to be sent home with all students unless you have specifically requested a paper version.

Lottery Applications for the 2023-2024 School Year are now available! If you have a child or sibling that will turn five years old by August 31, 2023 please go online at https://learningfirstcharter.org/admission/ or come in the Main Office and complete an application. The application deadline is March 1, 2023. All applications require a birth certificate and two proofs of address. Reminder, a new application must be completed for any child that is on the current waitlist.  Please contact Sally Ustaitis at (508) 799-7500 x1031 if you have any questions.

Coat Drive: Winter is coming! As the temperature drops we want to ensure every student is bundled up. If you have any new or gently used coats you’d like to donate, we’ll be collecting them starting Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

Holiday Dinner Collection: Learning First Charter is collecting canned food and perishables this year to support families in our community who are in need. Each grade is responsible for an item. Kindergarten: canned cranberry sauce Grade 1: canned corn Grade 2: canned green beans/peas Grade 3: box of corn muffin/bread mix Grade 4: canned or jar of gravy Grade 5: boxed dessert mix Grade 6: box of Kraft macaroni and cheese Grade 7: box of mashed potatoes Grade 8: box of stuffing. Teachers and staff, who are able to, will donate a turkey.

Holiday Dinner Giveaway: At Learning First, we show our thanks by giving back to our community. If your family or one you know is in need this holiday season, feel free to register for a holiday Dinner Basket. Those who register will receive a basket full of Thanksgiving goodies including a turkey, stuffing, and some of the usual fixings.

Reminders from the School Nurse:  Please be sure to send in any updated immunization records for your students or you can fax them to (508)753-9679.

If your child needs any kind of medication during school hours, we will need new doctors’ orders for this year on file.

Bubblers are still down so please send your child in with water.

Bancroft: Thursday, October 13th @ 6pm and Sunday, October 23rd @ 1pm
Worcester Academy: Sunday, October 16th and Sunday, November 6th
Notre Dame: Sunday, October 23rd @1pm
St. John’s:  Tuesday, October 18th @ 6pm

All of the open houses require an online registration. The links are located in the presentation that was sent to the 8th grade parent email.

After School Program Details: Afterschool Program sign up sheets have been posted in classrooms and hallways.  Slots are very limited and will be on a first come first serve basis . Students must sign up in school .

Programs are listed below:

Graphic Arts (6th-8th Grade only) Do you want your child to expand their creative mind? Is your child interested in graphic arts? This year Learning First Charter Public School will be offering a workshop afterschool where students can create digital and physical creative pieces. Scholars will be introduced to Adobe creative programs as well as Cricut Design Space. This will take place on Tuesday afternoons.

Leadership and Mentoring Program (6th-8th grade) is a full year program that will be held every Tuesday until 4pm sharp.  Students will Learn and practice social skills, building self esteem and self awareness among many other life topics throughout the year.

Intramural Basketball will be played among teams of Learning First students (4th6th grade only). The goal of the intramural programs is to provide a balance of competition and cooperation in a safe, non-threatening atmosphere. Students from all skill levels are encouraged to participate; equal playing time is one of the rules of the program. Typically, each team will play about one-two games per week. There are no practices.  These games will be played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays and end by 3:45. 

Community Connections: Haunted Hillando Halloween Maze is back! For the past several years the McNamara family in Shrewsbury MA have been hosting a Halloween maze in their yard for residents of Shrewsbury and surrounding communities. This maze is great for children of all ages and are decorated reasonably appropriate, nothing jumps at you and there is no blood, gore, weapons or implied violence. The maze is well-lit and filled with ghosts, skeletons, witches, spiders, scarecrows, and jack o; lanterns just hanging out looking creepy. There is no admission charge for the maze but voluntary donations for Shrewsbury Youth & Family Services Inc. would be greatly appreciated. Parental supervision is required. Please wear a mask and maintain reasonable social distance to those not in your party. There will be a concession area with snacks and warm apple cider. The Haunted Hillando Halloween Maze is located at 48 Hillando Drive, Shrewsbury, MA and will be open for visitors on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout October from 6-9 PM. Start date is Friday, October 7th!

                Discovery Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary for the whole month of October with $2.50 admissions for the entire month. Registration is required to visit. Reserve your tickets here: https://www.deiscoveryacton.org/

Jazz Hamilton is performing on October 15th 7:30 PM at Mechanics Hall!There will be a performance by Puerto Rican saxophonist Jazz Hamilton in an extravaganza called Carnevale! He is a crossover artist, combining Classical and Popular styles, with a Latin American flair. This will be a very special experience for Mechanics Hall.
